About UsGeneral Information on the Composition Program at OSUOklahoma State University requires a minimum of six semester credit hours in English composition for a baccalaureate degree. For some students who qualify, Basic Composition, International Composition, or Critical Analysis and Writing may be the most appropriate choices. However, most students take the two-semester sequence, Composition I (1113) and Composition II (1213). These courses are intended to develop skills in critical reading and writing at the college level. The first course concentrates on developing students' ability to read analytically and use development and revision skills in composing essays about what they read. The second course adds the component of college-level research and documentation skills. Both courses teach modes of organization and sentence correction and revision as an integral part of the writing process rather than as separate units of the course. All papers are read at least once by the instructor or by peer reviewers in rough draft, and students are expected to utilize these comments and corrections. It is assumed that students will write not only the required formal essays but a great deal of informal exploratory writing as well. Although individual instructors may choose to give occasional quizzes or worksheets on mechanics, such work will constitute a small portion of a course devoted to writing about college-level reading materials. The program is administered by a Composition Director, Associate Director, and four Assistant Directors. Click here for their contact information. First-Year Composition |
